Thank You to Reading Goes to the Dogs!
Toni and Greg Gualtiere with Ruthie and Hobo, have visited the library twice a week during the school year for several years. The dogs are such wonderful listeners. The dogs visited on Wednesday afternoons at 2:30 pm and Thursdays at 5:30 pm. Independent readers signed up to read for one 10 minute session. The program is suspended indefinitely at the moment. We appreciate all that Toni and Hobo, and Greg and Ruthie have done for the library and the readers of New Boston!
The main objective of this program is to provide a relaxed and “dog-friendly” atmosphere, which allows children to practice the skill of reading. By sitting down next to a dog and reading to the dog, all threats of being judged are put aside. The child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Reading improves because the child is practicing the skill of reading, building self-esteem, and associating reading with something pleasant.
